카사블랑카 Casablanca (1942)

1. 영화는 시간의 예술이라, 마치 잘만들어진 와인처럼 그것을 관람하기에 적절한 시기가 존재한다. 스물 다섯에 다시 본 카사블랑카, 그 낭만의 순도는 백퍼센트였다.

2. 영화에서 가장 돋보였던 장면을 꼽자면, 단연 불가리아에서 온 커플을 돕는 시퀀스다. 이 짧은 시퀀스 안에는 릭의 인간적인 캐릭터를 보여줄 뿐 아니라, 이 영화가 앞으로 보여주는 사건들에 정당성을 부여한다. 무엇보다 놀라운 것은 이를 구성하는 수법이 전혀 값싸지 않다는 점이다. 물론 영화의 사건을 이끌어가는 것이 직접적인 대사와 직접적인 감정표현이라는 것은 부정할 수 없지만, <카사블랑카>의 낭만과 분위기를 만드는 대사와 진심은 마치 시와 같다. 자신에게 감사를 표하는 어린 여인에게 '운이 좋았다'라고 짧게 전하는 대답은 말이다.

3. 이렇듯 <카사블랑카>의 낭만은 대사의 힘이다.
Rick : I'm saying it because it's true. Inside of us, we both know you belong with Victor. You're part of his work, the thing that keeps him going. If that plane leaves the ground and you're not with him, you'll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.
Ilsa : But what about us?
Rick : We'll always have Paris. We didn't have, we, we lost it until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last night.
Ilsa : When I said I would never leave you.
Rick : And you never will. But I've got a job to do, too. Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of. Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that. Now, now... Here's looking at you kid.

4. 두 사람에겐 언제나 그 때, 그 순간의 파리가 있다. 어쩌면 진정한 해피엔딩은 이처럼 박제된 '순간'일지 모른다.
